WHAT IS INFORMATION LITERACY?
WHAT IS INFORMATION LITERACY?
WHAT IS INFORMATION LITERACY?
According to the Association of College and Research Libraries:
Information Literacy is the set of skills needed to find, retrieve, analyze, and use information.
The beginning of the 21st century has been called the Information Age because of the explosion of information output and information sources. It has become increasingly clear that students cannot learn everything they need to know in their field of study in a few years of college. Information literacy equips them with the critical skills necessary to become independent lifelong learners.
Too often we assume that as students write research papers and read textbooks they are gaining sufficient IL skills. This is not so. IL skills may be introduced, but what is needed is a parallel curriculum in IL forming a strong foundation of a college education.
As the American Library Association Presidential Committee on Information Literacy (January 10, 1989, Washington, D.C.) says “Ultimately, information literate people are those who have learned how to learn. They know how to learn because they know how knowledge is organized, how to find information, and how to use information in such a way that others can learn from them. They are people prepared for lifelong learning because they can always find the information needed for any task or decision at hand.”

ATTENTION: Our Fall and Spring Campaigns seeking candidates will be announced in the Bulletin and Weekly Warrior. Once announced, a hard copy of the Candidate and Information packet will be made available in the library as well as the main office. Early submissions are always welcome. Late submissions are not accepted.
HELPFUL INFORMATION:
In order for students to be nominated for membership to the National Honor Society, students shall:
- be registered students at Tehachapi High School for at least one semester prior to nomination.
- be in grade 10, 11, or 12 during the time they are nominated.
- have a 3.0 cumulative GPA in accordance with the National Honor Society Chapter and the ASB Constitution of NHS.
The Faculty Council will consider students who:
- have been actively involved in their class, clubs or teams for THS, in particular, if they hold offices for such classes or clubs or are captains of sport teams.
- are a member of a music program on campus or any group where they represent our school to the community of Tehachapi.
- actively and positively contribute to the and learning environment of their classes.
In addition, the Faculty Council is looking for students who have given back to the school and community. Service to the school is primary, after that, community service will be considered. The Council considers students who display qualities of leadership, service, and character at school, at school-related events, and in the community. Once a student is nominated by the Faculty Council, the student may choose whether or not to join the organization. There are no required dues for students to pay; however, students are asked to pay for the honor cords upon acceptance of the nomination at the Induction Ceremony. Members receive the cords at Senior Awards Night and wear them during graduation. Forms are made available in the library during recruitment periods in the Fall and the Spring and are located in the reception area of the main office. If any student has further questions, please contact Mrs. Turmezei via email: rturmezei@teh.k12.ca.us. The deadline to submit a Letter of Introduction and a completed Candidate Form is listed on this document and in the Daily Bulletin during recruitment periods in the Fall and Spring.
Planning Ahead
Interested students can plan ahead and are encouraged to seek leadership opportunities by: running for office in clubs, putting leadership skills to practice by participating and stepping up in class, seeking leadership positions on sports teams and/or in Band, encouraging classmates, and serving in the community.
A hard copy of the information packet will be available in the THS library and main office. The deadline to submit a completed packet will be announced in the bulletin and made available in the library and main office. Early submissions are always welcome. Late submissions will not be accepted.
